Community Service: Current Projects
Bali Girls
Bali Fabrics, Inc. provides our Guild's
Community Service efforts by providing new batik fabrics for
our use in making Community Service Quilts. Members who
agree to complete a Community Service quilt within 2 months of
receiving Bali fabrics are known as our "Bali Girls." Members
work independently to produce a completed quilt OR may choose
to put together a small group to accomplish the task. If
you would like to become a Bali Girl member, contact Deb
Martinez to obtain fabric.
Be sure to see all of the quilts created by our Bali Girls in
our Photo
Gallery.
Quilts of Valor
Northern New Mexico Quilt Guild joins QOV (Quilts of Valor)
as a local group in making quilts to cover war wounded and injured
service members and veterans.
The QOV mini-group meets the first and third Wednesdays from
9:00 – 12:00 at Zia United Methodist Church, 3368 Governor
Miles Road. The group plans various quilt patterns, fabric, cutting,
and piecing resulting in a quilt top for one of the local longarmers
to quilt. Once quilted, the quilt is 'relayed' to another person
for binding.
In addition to the mini-group, block kits are prepared to be
available at guild meetings for attendees to pick up and return
when completed. The blocks can be returned at the next guild
meeting or dropped off at Santa Fe Quilting. New quilt patterns
and block kits will be provided every two months so that both
the morning and evening attendees will have an opportunity to
participate in making blocks. All quilts will have a label and
a case to "wrap" the quilt for presentation. Journals
are prepared to give some information about the process and thoughts
as the quilts have been stitched.
The final destination for the quilt is coordinated through Catherine
Roberts, founder of QOV and presented to the recipient during
special ceremonies.
There are many ways to volunteer to work with QOV: 1) Joining
the QOV mini-group when available, 2) making block kits, 3) putting
the blocks together, 4) quilting, 5) binding, 6) making presentation
cases, 7) preparing block kits, 8) making quilt tops, 9) donating
fabric, 10) donating batting, and 11) donating financially to
help purchase fabric and batting and pay postage to send the
quilts to the recipients.
For additional information please visit the QOV website at:
www.qovf.org.
Project Linus 2006
Sponsored by Sewing Center of Santa Fe
This is an ongoing yearly project.
Feel free to deliver your finished quilts to the Sewing Center
of Santa Fe.
According to the Project
Linus website "Project
Linus is a 100% volunteer non-profit organization with a two-fold
mission: First, it is our mission to provide love, a sense of
security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill,
traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade
blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer "blanketeers." Second,
it is our mission to provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity
for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for
the benefit of children." The main sponsor of Project Linus
is Janome of America.
